This week’s episode took me to a suburban household in Regina where Kris Blyth met with me to discuss his local clothing business; Skatch Clothing. I first encountered Skatch Clothing through their twitter account and found my way to their facebook page where they offer all kinds of deals on their apparel.
Now let’s get to the fun stuff – I not only love their very clean designs but the part that may be a no-brainer for City Sleuth, despite their on-line only presence, is the artists series. The artist series selects a local artist and features a custom piece of artwork on a shirt. Then 25 percent of the proceeds go to the charity of the artist’s choosing. Very cool idea in that it promotes local art and local charities. Plus they are limited edition so they are cool to own & wear! The shirt that we feature in this episode is entitled, Crop Circles by the Regina artist Taron Cochrane who’s portfolio can be found here. He is also active on twitter and seems to know a lot of cool happenings in town – kinda a double entendre for crop circles, right?
Anyway, back to the clothing – they really are a very high quality, they have a high cool factor and remind me of some huge international brands in surfing and skateboarding. I also love that they have a variety; onesies for babies, tanks designed for women as well as traditional Ts and hoodies (oops, my American is showing – I meant bunny hugs) all with little design flairs usually only found on big-name expensive American brands.
So even if it’s currently only online, they are local boys, creating local Sask – er – Skatch merchandise and supporting the local artist community all at the same time. Check ‘em out and tell ‘em that City Sleuth sent you! And no, I don’t get any free stuff from any of the great places I profile – I just get to meet a lot of cool people!
