Fresh Fish on the Prairies? You Bet!

This week’s episode of City Sleuth found me back in the Cathedral District at a place I honestly never thought I’d find on the Prairies; Pacific Fresh Fish on 13th Avenue, Regina (306) 525-9147.  I love fish.  All kinds of fish but mostly salt water; crustaceans, shellfish, big fish, little fish – oh and all kinds of roe too!  However, what first drew me to Pacific fresh Fish was the sea asparagus – sea beans as they are called in the States and samphire as it is called in the UK. I developed a taste for these briny succulents a few years back and despaired of finding them in Regina.
However, the owner of Pacific Fresh Fish sourced them for us a couple of years ago, scouring the coastline of Vancouver to find the freshest, plumpest variety and now they are brought in fresh in season and stocked regularly as a frozen item and also pickled in jars.  I wrote about the sea asparagus in my food blog a while ago so if you are interested in how to prepare them check it out here.
Of course, Pacific fresh Fish is more than just sea asparagus and I went there last week to speak with the manager, Ted Platt and get some tips on preparing a celebration dinner and even a lesson on how to open fresh oysters in the shell – and YES! they have the most delicious varieties of oysters, clams and mussels, always fresh and delicious.

When you visit, don’t forget to ask about recommendations for preparation.  These folks really know their products and love them.  they want you to have the best possible experience with the food that you buy from them and always take the time to make suggestions, explain the source of all their products and tell you about proper and safe storage and handling.  So if you are looking to eat on the lighter side for the summer – check out the best fish in the city!  Tell them City Sleuth sent you and then please do tell me about your experience!
If you have any ideas for places you think I should profile, let me know here in the comments, on facebook, twitter or shoot me an email.
